The DVD-RW drive in my laptop is faulty. I’ve got enough computer hardware know-how to reckon that I can buy a replacement drive on ebay and install it myself. Only I haven’t worked with laptops before - are DVD drives in them easy enough to access, take out and replace? And how do I know which model to get? Will the model of DVD drive be specific to my laptop, or will one model of drive be used in all kinds of laptops? So shall I search by laptop model, or shall I find out what model of DVD drive it needs? The laptop in questions in a Medion 41567
You can pull the drive out of the laptop (carefully) and read the product number. There should be a “free” service & troubleshooting guide that you can download at your laptop manufacturer’s website. Contrary to what others have said here, it is not that difficult to do. Once out and you have the product number, you can search for a replacement at the manufacturer’s website or call them. Unfortunately for internal components, most are proprietary. So you have to go back to the manufacturer for a replacement or upgrade. However, another option is to get an external USB burner instead. There are lots of other options here.

My laptop isn’t working, I think it has virus. When I turn on, it appears a blue screen. I want to format the laptop, but the dvd/cd drive isn’t working. I mean the dvd/cd drive has been broken for a long time. Is there anyway to format a laptop without using the dvd/cd drive. I have the Window XP cd. Please help me. Thank you.
You might be able to use an external CD/DVD drive to do the installation. You could also slave the drive in a desktop with a working CD/DVD drive (you’ll need a 2.5″ to 3.5″ hard drive adapter), wipe the drive, make it a system disk so you can boot from it or have a 98 startup disk handy (which actually wouldn’t be much help since most laptops don’t have floppy drives anymore…), copy the contents of the XP CD over, and start the installation from the hard drive (I know you can do that with Windows 95 and 98, but I’m not 100% certain about XP, although I don’t know why it shouldn’t work).

I came across the helpful article in the Popular Mechanics about DVD regions encryption and how to change them. It does become a problem since we all love to play movies which have been brought from other countries.
Usually Laptop DVD Burner allows you to change your DVD region settings five times, and the sixth attempt will lock this settings forever.
Fortunately, there are clever programmers who have created software solutions that circumvent disc regions entirely, thus turning your notebook into a portable multiregional DVD player.
Windows OS users have the most options vs the Mac OS. One of the best is probably Remote Selector - a free software utility that interacts with your DVD-playing program, allowing it to play DVDs from any region.
Follow the link below for the article that extensively describes how to deal with Macs region settings.
